Photoshoot vs AI campaign images: what each really costs
A styled lifestyle shoot typically runs $150–500+ per image, or $1,500–5,000+ for a shoot day before travel. Cheap AI image gigs cost $15–30 per image but rarely look like your brand. A creative-directed AI campaign sits in between: roughly $35–50 per finished image, with the concept and product accuracy handled for you.
What does a traditional outdoor shoot cost?
For a small brand, the bill is more than the photographer's fee. Published 2026 rates put styled lifestyle images at $150–500+ per image, on-model images at $50–500 per look, and a commercial shoot day at $1,500–5,000+. Retouching adds roughly $45–100+ per image.
Outdoor shoots add the costs nobody quotes upfront: travel to the location, models, permits, a second day when the weather turns, and samples in every size. I've run shoots at altitude for years; the weather alone can double a budget.
The bigger problem for a growing brand isn't one shoot. It's that ads need fresh images every month, and you can't book a mountain shoot every month.
What about cheap AI images?
On marketplaces like Fiverr, a single AI image with one revision typically costs $15–30, and a batch of 10–20 curated images $70–120. Self-serve AI tools go even lower, a few dollars per image.
The catch is what you're buying: prompts and outputs, not direction. Common problems:
- Logos redrawn or misspelled, zips that don't exist, prints that drift
- Generic "stock" scenes that could belong to any brand
- No campaign idea tying the images together
- Light and terrain that any outdoor customer can tell are wrong
For a catalogue background swap, that's fine. For the images that represent your brand in ads, it usually isn't.
Where does a creative-directed AI campaign fit?
In the middle, on purpose. You pay for the thinking (concept, art direction, product accuracy) and AI handles the expensive part of production: locations, models and weather.
For reference, an experienced freelance creative director charges around £475 a day (about $78 an hour). At Cosmic Sandwich, a month of 20 finished images plus 2 new concepts is $1,000, about $50 per image with the direction included. That's roughly what one and a half days of a creative director's time costs, for a full month of finished work.
Side by side: 20 campaign images
| Route | Typical cost for 20 images | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| Styled lifestyle shoot | $3,000–10,000+ (at $150–500+ per image), plus travel and samples | Real location and people; slow to repeat |
| Cheap AI image gigs | $70–600 | Fast and cheap; generic look, product errors common |
| Creative-directed AI campaign | About $1,000 | One concept, brand-specific scenes, details fixed by hand |

So which should a small brand choose?
Use each for what it's good at:
- Book a real shoot for a launch film, an athlete partnership, or a story where the real place and people matter.
- Use cheap AI tools for quick background swaps on catalogue images.
- Use a creative-directed campaign for the steady flow of ad and website images that need to look like your brand, every month.
If you're new to this, start small. Test one product, one concept and a handful of images, and judge the result on your own ads. That's exactly why I offer a 6-image test set before any monthly work. You can see how a product photo becomes a campaign, or check the current offer.
